Statement on Recall of Certain 2019 MY Mazda3 Vehicles Wheel Lug Nut Concern

WASHINGTON, DC (June 28, 2019) – Mazda North American Operations has filed a Part 573 notification with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for a safety defect on certain 2019 Model Year Mazda3 vehicles. The wheel lug nuts may loosen and fall off during normal driving. In the worst case, continuous use will lead to a wheel detaching from the vehicle.  A wheel separating from the vehicle increases the risk of a crash.  Mazda’s recall number is 3519F.

A manufacturing process error may result in a gap between the wheel hub bolt and hub flange during assembly. This gap causes loosening of the lug nuts though they were initially tightened to the correct specification at the plant. A rattling noise occurs prior to a wheel detachment from the vehicle.

No field cases of wheel separation have been reported, and there have been no accidents, injuries, or deaths related to this concern.
