Debuting at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2012, the Mazda CX-5 was the first vehicle designed and engineered with both Mazda’s signature SKYACTIV Technology and KODO—Soul of Motion design. This combination of innovative technology and design was a hit with both critics and owners. Fast-forward to the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, and the all-new 2017 Mazda CX-5 takes both SKYACTIV and KODO design to an even higher level with its athletic exterior and sophisticated interior and refined driving dynamics that will be sure to please drivers and passengers alike. The all-new 2017 CX-5 also continues to surprise by bringing the long-awaited SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter, turbocharged diesel engine to the U.S.
“In developing CX-5, I was determined to find a way to break through the traditional trade-off between driving pleasure and passenger comfort,” said Masaya Kodama, CX-5 program manager at Mazda Corporation. “The goal became to add a new dimension of driving pleasure to the CX-5 by making it an SUV that all customers would enjoy and form an attachment with.”
Inspired by the expressions of beauty found in traditional Japanese crafts, designers stripped all non-essential elements from the SUV’s exterior and interior and focused on a simple, yet bold, approach to exterior and interior design. Mazda designers aimed to create a “refined toughness” with the all-new CX-5. Soul Red Crystal, a new paint choice for 2017, draws the eyes to the subtle design cues with its 20 percent greater color saturation and 50 percent more depth.
Inside the CX-5, Mazda’s human-centric approach and sophisticated design deliver greater comfort and style. The interior features high-quality materials and finishes that truly express Mazda’s detail-driven design language. To enhance the overall driving experience, the all-new CX-5 also adopts a standard touchscreen 7-inch infotainment display with Mazda Connect connectivity applications.
Refined Driving Dynamics
The beauty of the CX-5 is more than just skin-deep, and Mazda’s engineers used advanced technology to make an already great driver’s car even better. Through the adoption of SKYACTIV-VEHICLE DYNAMICS with G-Vectoring Control (GVC), both drivers and passengers will experience a more refined and comfortable drive.
GVC uses the engine in conjunction with the steering, throttle inputs and suspension responses, to provide a more refined driving experience for both driver and passengers. Drivers will find they’ll be making less subtle adjustments to the steering wheel while driving down the highway or streets and cornering is more planted and responsive.
Additional upgrades to the SKYACTIV-CHASSIS reduce vibration and the floating sensation drivers feel after going over rough terrain. The CX-5’s SKYACTIV-BODY also received some attention and is nearly 16-percent stiffer than the outgoing model. The steering is more precise and the car responds just as the driver intended, all adding up to a more confident driving experience.
New Engine Option
Finally, Mazda has expanded the number of engine choices for the all-new CX-5. Making its debut in the United States, the all-new Mazda CX-5 will have the option of the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 clean diesel engine as well as the SKYACTIV-G 2.5 direct-injection gasoline engine. The addition of a diesel engine, with its high torque and fuel-efficiency, is yet another expression of Mazda’s SKYACTIV Technologies mission to deliver fun-to-drive experiences without compromising efficiency.
“Mazda’s team of engineers and designers have worked diligently to create vehicles that are high-quality, stylish, fun-to-drive and fuel-efficient,“ said Masahiro Moro, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations. “Using our unique SKYACTIV Technology, Mazda has been able to achieve class-leading fuel efficiency in nearly every segment it competes in while remaining true to its core mission that Driving Matters.”
By bringing together the latest innovations in SKYACTIV technology along with an updated approach to KODO design, the all-new CX-5 makes an already great car even better, and demonstrates Mazda’s ongoing commitment to building sophisticated cars for drivers that passengers and passersby will also enjoy.
