Mazda engineers and designers redesigned the rear seats to support an ideal posture—sitting upright with your spine in its natural “S” shape. They also added a two–stage reclining mechanism to make sure rear passengers could get comfy on especially long drives. The default angle of the rear seat has been increased 2 degrees in rake to 24 degrees, with a second recline setting to further rake the seats to 28 degrees—a direct result of talking with thousands of previous-generation CX-5 customers.
Hundreds of hours of development went into the second row, resulting in seats that utilize urethane cushioning with varying densities of foam along the spine that help support the body. CX-5 seats form a more three-dimensional shape around the body, reducing instability while seated. Any progress towards minimizing the restless, infamous phrase, “Are we there yet?” is a major victory.
Refined Features
To complement the redesigned seats, available rear-seat heaters warm up the seatbacks and seat cushions; and switches in the armrest enable rear passengers to adjust the temperature in three stages. To help everyone stay cool, rear A/C vents are individually adjustable. The rear center armrest also features cupholders and two powerful 2.1-amp USB charging ports for tablets and phones.
If your passengers are not big enough to demand any special seat treatment, you’ll be pleased that easy-to-use LATCH child safety seat tethers are among CX-5 safety and security highlights. Should you have to constantly load and unload those child seats, you’ll appreciate the rear doors that open at a wide 80 degrees, a 6-degree improvement over the previous model.

Mazda also makes a push for all-encompassing quiet and comfort, and you’ll notice that the cabin environment in the CX-5 is an especially quiet environment, rivaling significantly more expensive vehicles.
It was benchmarked against its bigger-brother CX-9 for quietness. But, rather than go after simply lowering decibels, Mazda engineers attack ambient noise, low noise frequencies and any sort of sound that gets in the way of enjoying the journey. Mazda’s goals also centered around keeping volumes and inaudible sound frequencies the same from front to rear, easing conversations and the ever-present games of “I spy” along the way.
