CX-5 Adds Diesel Engine Option for Premium Driving Experience and Efficiency

Further equipping consumers with options to fit their lifestyle and driving preferences, Mazda announced at the 2019 New York International Auto Show the United States debut of the 2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature with AWD featuring a 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine.

The addition of the Skyactiv-D diesel engine option for the Signature trim of the 2019 CX-5 gives consumers even more choices for the already well-rounded crossover SUV.

“As Mazda continues our climb toward premium, we will offer more powertrain choices that premium customers expect,” said Jeff Guyton, president of Mazda North American Operations. “Diesel is such an option, and for this reason, we are also working to bring diesel with AWD to our beautiful Mazda6 sedan.”

EFFORTLESS EFFICIENCY

Mazda’s introduction of the Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter diesel engine to the U.S. powertrain lineup addresses demand for a diesel that offers a premium driving experience.

In cooperation with the proper federal and state agencies, such as the California Air Resource Board (CARB), Mazda’s Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter diesel engine passes all appropriate regulations, while also retaining the exciting driving characteristics of a diesel engine.

This highly-efficient diesel engine is designed to comply with strict exhaust gas regulations globally. It also provides greater fuel efficiency thanks to the low compression ratio of 14.1:1.

“We’ve seen much success with this engine globally,” Guyton said.  “From 2012 to 2015, diesel vehicle sales in Japan grew from less than 1 percent to 5.7 percent of the industry. And Mazda accounts for about 70 percent of those diesel sales.”

Mazda’s continued support of diesel technology is part of Mazda’s Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 plan, which is focused on reducing carbon dioxide emissions from a “well-to-wheel” approach, considering the emissions over the vehicle’s entire lifecycle. Mazda believes that there are still significant opportunities to improve the internal combustion engine, leading to increased fuel efficiency for both diesel and gasoline engines.

PREMIUM DRIVING EXPERIENCE

With diesel engines having many benefits, the most obvious is their famous “torquey” driving performance. Mighty and silky-smooth acceleration—perfect for when merging or overtaking on the freeway—amplifies the 2019 Mazda CX-5 driving dynamics and overall experience.

Mazda’s diesel-powered CX-5 is the ideal crossover SUV for those who care about performance and enjoy the outdoors. Perfect for conquering hilly roads full of gear and passengers, Mazda’s CX-5 predictive i-Activ all-wheel drive is willing and able to reach the next adventure.

The 2019 CX-5 Signature AWD with Skyactiv-D 2.2 provides a high torque driving experience and revs freely at high rpms. The Skyactiv-D 2.2 engine is estimated to deliver 168 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 290 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm with an EPA estimated 27 mpg on city, 30 mpg on highway and 28 mpg overall. A sequential twin turbocharger realizes smooth and linear response from low to high engine speeds, and greatly increases low- and high-end torque (up to the 5,500 rpm rev limit).
